Mary Berry's honeycomb crunchies

First we made the honeycomb: 

 

• 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
• 75g caster sugar
• 2 tbsp golden syrup

First measure the  bicarbonate of soda ready for when you need it, plus a wire whisk and an oiled baking tray. Put the sugar and golden syrup into a saucepan and set it on a very low heat. Warm gently for 10 minutes until all the sugar has melted, stirring occasionally with the wooden spoon.


When it has melted, turn up the head and allow it boil. Leave to bubble  without stirring until it turns golden-brown.


Turn off the heat under the pan.  Add the bicarbonate of soda and quickly whisk it in for a couple of seconds only (Done by an adult as care must be taken in case the mixture froths off and burns  as it’s extremely hot- it is recommended a glove is warn.

Pour it into the middle of the oiled baking tray. Don’t spread it out or touch it or the tray. Leave it to cool and harden

  Now as well as the honeycomb, to make the crunchies you need:
  
  

  • 250g mixture dark and milk chocolate
  • 100g unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp golden syrup
  • 150g crushed digestive biscuits
  
  Melt the chocolate, butter and golden syrup in the microwave.
   
  Stir in the crushed digestive biscuits and honeycomb (we put them in a plastic bag and bashed them with a rolling pin.)
  
  
  Pour in to a silver foiled lined baking sheet and leave to cool in the fridge! Cut into slices

Silver foil painting

P enjoyed painting today on silver foil. She painted dots and lines carefully, before descending into hand painting!  She also enjoyed the sound her paint made!

Harry Potter Studio

Today we went to visit the http://www.wbstudiotour.co.uk/?gclid=CJXQ6OHNwLYCFcjKtAodkVMAnw with the girls. It is only an hour from Cambridge. It was amazing looking around all the sets, seeing all the props and learning how they did all the special effects. The girls enjoyed a wand lesson but we avoided the broomstick flying which had a big queue and costs money to buy the photo. There were lots of people to talk about how the films were made and the girls enjoyed filling in booklets.  However, it was expensive and the shop was extortionate.

Wimpole farm lambing

Today we went to Wimpole home farm for their lambing event. It has nearly finished and we had access to less pens than in previous years which was a bit disappointing, but still the girls had a good time! The girls enjoyed grooming donkeys, stroking cows, watching lambs being bottle-fed and playing in the adventure playground. 
I never feel Wimpole is the most child-friendly farm to visit but if you want to see where your food comes from it is great place to visit!

Stained glass Easter Eggs 2

The girls made tissue paper stained glass Easter eggs by sticking pre-cut squares of tissue paper onto egg shaped sticky backed plastic. Prefect for fine motor control development and colour recognition.  They look quite effective! This could be extended by thinking about pattens.

Stained glass windows 1

Today the girls used some 3D peel-able glass paint (bought from hobby craft) and some acetate cut into the shapes of eggs to make stained glass windows. The paints were easy to squeeze out but were hard to use accurately and the girls seemed to get sleeves and hair in to their paint! Two of them ended up doing butterfly painting style pictures (where we folded the egg in half to cover both halves with paint!).

To extend this next time I might buy some of the glass pens to allow more detailed work. 

 

 

How to Catch a Star

Today I took the girls to see this at the Junction (http://www.junction.co.uk/) which often has fab children's theatre on Sundays. They have mats at the front to allow children to be able to see but actually all the seats seem to offer a great view. 

The show itself started with the both actors making an effort to get to know kids in the audience which then later allowed them to personalise the show. It was a great adaptation of this well known book which plenty of audience participation. Even P joined in with the actions.
